-REVIEW ESSAY: Patricia Highsmith at 100: How the author’s chilling stories of murder have fascinated filmmakers for decades: Highsmith’s murderous con artist in The Talented Mr Ripley has become so well-known that he is often a point of reference for any real-life killers with a smattering of charm. As we enter the centenary of the writer

The movie follows the book quite closely in part but the book's plot is far too complex for all the detail to be included in a 139 minute movie. “The Talented Mr. Ripley” evidently conceives the search for fulfillment and identity. The character of Tom Ripley is ‘isolated’ from his ideal world of Dickie Greenleaf. Unreceptive to this seclusion, Ripley exploits his talents of “telling lies, forging signatures and impersonating almost anybody”, indicating to the audience the corrupt morals implicated in attaining Ripley’s This was about something else.

For now, let me focus on The Talented Mr Ripley. The book is able to give a background into Tom’s upbringing, painting a turbulent childhood thanks to his Aunt and the loss of his parents. The film, despite criticism over being a shade long, has no time for explanation which perhaps detracts from the level of sympathy the book is able to induce.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 In Minghella’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley”, Minghella shows the extreme change of Tom Ripley, into a character with wealth, and social status. Tom Ripley makes every effort to be the effective personification of The American Dream, as he reinvents his character into that of Dickie Greenleaf. Displaying impressive talent indeed, “The Talented Mr. Ripley” is a mostly intoxicating and involving tale of intrigue and crime that loses its stride somewhat in the home stretch. With The Talented Mr Ripley, Anthony Minghella gives us a superb adaption of Patricia Highsmith's novel of the same name. It tells the story of a young con artist, who almost accidentally appears to evolve into the role of a serial killer whilst in pursuit of a hedonistic lifestyle, who, with a combination of intelligence, cunning and a unique skill set, always seems able to evade justice.
